Prof. Turgut Tarhanlı
After working as a faculty member at Istanbul University Faculty of Law between the years 1981-1999, Mr. Turgut Tarhanlı has been acting as a faculty member of International Law and Human Rights Law Department at Istanbul Bilgi University Faculty of Law since 1999. He served as the Dean of Faculty of Law at Istanbul Bilgi University between 2002-2019 and acted as the Head of Human Rights Law Application and Research Centre between 2002-2020. He taught International Law, Human Rights Law and Air and Space Law courses at the undergraduate programs of Istanbul University and Istanbul Bilgi University Faculty of Law. He still conducts International Human Rights Law - Protection Procedures, Business World and Human Rights and Human Rights Activism courses at Istanbul Bilgi University’s LLM and PhD programs. In the latter aforementioned course, a multidisciplinary approach is prioritized in order to corelate with critical theories and especially contemporary art practices.
Mr. Turgut Tarhanlı has worked for international projects on dispute resolution, negotiation, international crimes and restorative justice at Harvard and Princeton University; he has been situated as a visiting researcher at New York University twice. He has six published books, many academic articles in both Turkish and English. In 2001, he was awarded the Certificate of Appreciation by the President of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) for his contributions to refugee law studies in Turkey. He was a member of the Prime Ministry Human Rights Advisory Board between 2002-2005 and a member of the OSCE Moscow Process Committee of Independent Experts, Group of Turkey between 2002-2008. Between 1996-2007, he wrote for the newspaper Radikal on international relations, human rights and democracy regularly. He is the founder/member of many international and local non-governmental organizations and a member of the Istanbul Bar Association since 1980.
